Ubuntu strikes again, it’s been a while since I installed it last and here’s the make-up. My Dell Studio 15 came with Vista pre-installed. I tried to use the internal “Shrink Volume” as much as possible but didn’t get it too far — even when I used JK Defag (which is excellent at what it  [ Read More ]

Nerdy Weekend

Posted by fio 1 Comment

Well today is a nerdy day. I’ve been playing around with a few new Web2.0 app things (namely www.activebudget.org) and want to try some of this AJAX stuff. Since python and django are the flavour of the day at work I decided to try to set that up, unfortunately I don’t really have a clue  [ Read More ]

Just got myself a set of Trust SP2930-P USB Speakers from the nice guys at 7dayshop.com, They didn’t work straight out when I plugged them in (both in ubuntu and windows) — restarted and they worked (for both ubuntu and windows). They’re nice, compact, no external power needed, and a relatively crisp sound — far  [ Read More ]

Mp3s :(

Okay, totem used to work, but somewhere along my recent updating, it’s fallen over, going to give xmms a whirl. xmms worked fine, but I decided to write and fix rythymbox and totem (they look nicer…!) — my error was: “Totem could not play ‘file.mp3′. You do not have a decoder installed to handle this  [ Read More ]

django

I’ve asked the nice compsoc guys to install django on their (ubuntu) server so I can start playing around with it here. Apparently it’s not the easiest of processes, so I’m hoping one of the guys still in Galway can pick it up for me :) Gotta love the HLM. I find django to be  [ Read More ]

Ubuntu Printing

Ubuntu printing seemed to work pretty easily, just “System, Administration, Printing” … no Dell 1100, which is what I have, but a quick google showed that the Samsung ML-1000 driver should work…. and it does. Crisp too. Referenced from digitalhomecanada.com.

Having spent the morning fixing the network here at home, I wondered what the network support would be like for my laptop…. did a quick google and came across lots of samba mentions and configs, etc…. but eventually just turned on the laptop, tried “Places” –> “Network Servers” and *voila* my workgroups appeared, all I  [ Read More ]

Mounting Shared

Posted by fio 0 Comment

In a similar vein to the previous post, I wanted to mount the shared drive, wasn’t sure before because it had nothing in it, so I windowed up and moved most of my files across, leaving only programs and their non-compatible filetypes behind. Helped me sort out the millions of copies of files I had  [ Read More ]

Mounting Windows

I thought I had my windows partition mounting fine, used: sudo mount /dev/sda2 /media/windows/ -t ntfs -o nls=utf8,umask=0222 After having created the /media/windows dir It appeared fine and then I added the line to the fstab : /dev/sda2 /media/winodws ntfs nls=utf8,umask=0222 0 0 But on reboot it didn’t appear.. the problem? Yes, I can’t spell.  [ Read More ]

Ipod

I have an old 3G IPod, ok, well it’s 2 years old, that makes it old in tech terms. No click wheel, etc. How would Ubuntu like it? Well I left my firewire connector back at college, so I was relying on my USB connector, fingers crossed I plugged it in. 10 seconds later it  [ Read More ]
